PCS moves or long family road trips are stressful by themselves. Adding winter driving conditions on top can negatively affect your health. Use these simple techniques to help reduce the impact.

ON THE ROAD

Tips to help you focus and stay energized while driving.

1. Three-Part Breath — Practice this simple breathing technique when driving through stressful road conditions to help calm your nerves. Two short breaths in and one long exhale out.

2. Road Food — Prep in advance to avoid a sugar crash. Things you’ll need …

  • Aluminum Bottle – Skip expensive packaged water by bringing your own refillable water bottle.
  • Aluminum Travel Mug – Perfect for hot coffee or tea. Travel Tip: Most gas stations will let you refill your mug at a discount rate. This allows you to use the restroom without feeling like you have to purchase something you don’t want, and perhaps you can avoid soda.
  • Aluminum Thermos – Reduce your fast food stops by pre-packing a portable mug of homemade soup or chili for lunch. Note: Check outdoor stores for travel mugs that include an attached spoon!
  • Snacks – Pre-make these delicious Cranberry Pistachio Bites to munch on in between meals. Keep cold in a small portable cooler that is easily accessible.

OFF THE ROAD

Once settled into your hotel, use these wellness techniques to relax after a long day on the road.

3. Peppermint Oil Tablets or Tea — Great way to help settle your nerves after fighting winter road conditions and/or eating food that may have upset your stomach.

4. Yoga Mat — Bring a travel yoga mat so you can spread out on the floor and stretch. Travel Tip: After sitting all day your blood will have traveled to your toes. Bring the blood back up to your head by lying on the floor with your hips and legs propped against the wall with your arms spread horizontally. Hold this pose for approximately five minutes while breathing deeply to release your stress.

5. Lavender Oil — The scent of lavender is a natural stress reliever and can help reduce headaches. Bring a small travel bottle and dab the oil on your temples and wrists right before you settle into bed. The smell will help you relax and get a peaceful night’s rest.
