EVIE KING

President

Evie is a former Army Brat who said she would never marry into the military. Well, after 3 years of long-distance dating, she married her soldier in 2011. They have gone through 3 deployments together, moved to 4 different duty stations, and had 1 overseas assignment to South Korea. Evie was named the 2017 Armed Forces Insurance Spouse of the Year for Ft. Bragg and the 2023 Armed Forces Insurance Spouse of the Year. Not one to sit idle, you’ll usually find Evie meeting new people and finding resources in the community, trying new recipes (usually when company comes over), and planning her family’s next trip.

Before I Worked for InDependent I:

Health/Life

Favorite Duty Station:
This question is always so hard to answer. I have truly enjoyed very duty station, but if I had to choose it would be between Ft. Lee, Camp Casey, and Ft. Leavenworth.

Fitness Routine:
I enjoy a mix of my rowing machine, HIIT workouts, going on long walks and free weights at home. I like variety!

Food Philosophy:
I don’t believe you need to sacrifice delicious food in order to be healthy. I’m all about making your own rules, listening to your body, and using my food journey to do more rather than less.

Favorite Pastime:
Travel! And reading. Preferably, reading while traveling.

Favorite Healthy Snack:
Hummus and veggies. So many flavor combinations and it’s great for an on-the-go lifestyle. My favorite combination right now is sugar snap peas sautéed in a little olive oil or coconut oil until they’re hot, but still have a good crunch. Add a dollop of hummus and you have a fantastic snack! The cold hummus goes perfectly with the hot veggies. Veggies a la mode, anyone?

Fitness Achievement Most Proud of:
Running a half marathon! It was my 2017 goal and I did it. Before that I had never run more than 2.5 miles without stopping. I am training for another one in 2021.

Favorite Workout Gadget:
I LOVE the Runkeeper app personalized training programs. It’s what got me through my half marathon and it’s what I recommend to anyone wanting to train or track their workouts.

Favorite Workout Song:
I listen to podcasts, or audio books. I really enjoy the idea of multi-tasking while I workout. In this season of life, I’ve learned to adapt my schedule to fit everything that I enjoy into a day. For music, it’s usually salsa music, electronic, or alt-rock.

Biggest Fitness Hurdle:
Getting my workout in. I am not a morning person, but I also am so tired by the end of the day that I know that I won’t exercise after I leave work. It’s a constant struggle, even though I KNOW I never regret a workout.

What Makes You Smile:
Going on a peaceful walk around our neighborhood. The fresh air always puts a smile on my face.

You are not here merely to make a living. You are here to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, and with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world. You impoverish yourself if you forget this errand.
